Mom Makes Adaptive Clothing for Kids!

One mom decided to make a difference, by creating adaptive clothing so that children like her son Oliver will be able to wear jeans and other clothes just like their friends. She understands the importance of fitting in and through her non-profit organization Runway of Dreams, she is making it happen!

“Runway of Dreams Foundation (RODF) was founded in 2014 by Mindy Scheier – a fashion designer and mother of a child with a disability. Her journey began when her son Oliver, who has a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, wanted to wear jeans to school like his friends. She soon realized that millions of people around the world were also struggling to access fashionable clothing that meets their needs. She envisioned a world where adaptive clothing for people with disabilities was mainstream. After spending 20 years in the fashion industry and opening a design school for kids, Mindy decided to combine her experience and her passion by creating the Runway of Dreams Foundation.

The Runway of Dreams Foundation is a nonprofit that works toward a future of inclusion, acceptance and opportunity in the fashion industry for people with disabilities. Founded on the basis that clothing is a basic human need, the Runway of Dreams Foundation develops, delivers and supports charitable initiatives to broaden the reach of adaptive clothing and promote the differently-abled community in the fashion industry. Through adaptive clothing donations, employment opportunity initiatives, adaptive design workshops, awareness building campaigns and scholarships programs, the Runway of Dreams Foundation is empowering people with disabilities with opportunity, confidence, independence and style.”

On top of that she was named CNN Person of the Year for 2017!  And now she is at it again, starting the #NOTBROKEN Movement!

Jon Stewart gracefully highlights autism awareness when segment doesn’t go as planned

Carly Fleishmann was instrumental in changing the way that I interact and see my non-verbal son. When I heard that she was going to be on Jon Stewart’s Night of Too Many Stars, I was excited. When I heard that she was unable to do her interview with Stephen Cobert due to being distracted by pieces of confetti, I was saddened. When I read and saw how everyone handled it, I was touched.

Welcome to the Able Buddies NC website!

Able Buddies NC is a non-profit organization, helping to bring social acceptance, awareness and interaction to our special needs friends and family!

We have created this page to be a local hub for news, information, and events for our special needs community members of Onslow and Pender Counties.
We post our Monthly Special Needs Dance flyers on our Facebook page, Special Needs Community of Onslow and Pender Counties, but felt that we needed to have a centralized place filled with local resources, to make it easier for everyone to find the information that they are looking for.

As you browse around our pages, you will find 2 very important sections. The first is our calendar of events. We invite you to send us your family friendly events and happenings within our area.
The second is Randy’s List. This list is compiled of businesses and services, which we can personally vouch for. They have either donated to our monthly dances, or we have used their business/service directly. If you know of a local business/service that you believe should be added to Randy’s List, please contact us and share your experience.

Please come back often to check out our calendar, and also watch for Able Buddies NC fundraisers and events!
